The Wii (pronounced as the pronoun we, IPA: [wiː]) is the fifth home video game console released by Nintendo. The console is the direct successor to the Nintendo GameCube. Nintendo states that its console targets a broader demographic than that of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3.[3] It competes with both as part of the seventh generation of gaming systems.
A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and can detect acceleration in three dimensions. Another is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.[4]
Nintendo first spoke of the console at the 2004 E3 press conference and later unveiled the system at the 2005 E3. Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the controller at the September 2005 Tokyo Game Show.[5] At E3 2006, the console won the first of several awards.[6] By December 8, 2006, it completed its launch in four key markets. During the week of September 12, 2007, the Financial Times declared that the Wii is the current sales leader of its generation.[7]
Retail copies of games are supplied on DVD-like Wii Optical Discs packaged in a keep case along with instruction information. On European releases, these retail boxes have a triangle printed at the bottom corner of the paper insert sleeve side. The hue of the triangle can be used to identify which region the particular title is intended for and which manual languages are included. The console supports regional lockout.[72]
New games representing Nintendo’s flagship franchises, including The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Animal Crossing, Pokémon, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart and Fire Emblem, have been announced for the Wii. Likewise, there are original titles for it as well as expected third party games.[73] Ubisoft announced eight titles for release over the launch period and have stated that they have a further six currently in development while Midway Games has announced six titles.[74] EA has declared their ‘100%’ support for the system[75] and has since gone on to purchase long-time partner Headgate Studios, which now develops exclusively for Nintendo’s console.[76] Namco Bandai also announced that they are developing 37 games for the Wii for their fiscal year ending March 2008.[77] On April 27, 2007, Satoru Iwata stated that 45 out of Nintendo’s 124 first-party games are being developed for the console. The other 79 titles are being developed for the Nintendo DS.[78] As of July 25, 2007 the Wii has more exclusive games in development than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.[79]
The Virtual Console service allows Wii owners to play games originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Nintendo 64, as well as Sega’s Mega Drive/Genesis, NEC’s TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine,[80] and Neo Geo.[81] Virtual Console games are distributed over broadband Internet via the Wii Shop Channel, and are saved to the Wii internal flash memory or to a removable SD card.
History/super-mario-game-cheats.html.
The practice of cheat codes and secrets in a video game was started in the Atari 2600 game Adventure. Afterwards, codes were implemented and used by game developers to playtest certain aspects of their games; for example, a common use of a cheat code is to skip to a level in a game. In moddable games, such cheat modes are often left in released titles specifically for modder use.
The practice became well-known, and now many games have cheat codes intentionally included as a form of easter egg or unlockable prizes. Some video game magazines have sections devoted to providing these codes. Booklets are also produced that collect cheat codes for a large number of games. Many codes, for both older and more recent games, can be found at specialized websites.
The method of entering cheat codes varies; on video game consoles, the code is frequently a sequence of button presses. Alternatively, on computers such as the Amiga or PC, the code may be textual and entered using the keyboard, or through a more complex combination of input devices. In some recent games, the cheats are also enabled by adding special settings in game configuration files.
Usage
While normal cheat codes are built into the game by the programmers, unofficial cheat codes can be created by manipulating the contents of the memory address for a running game. On video game consoles, this is done using a cheat cartridge. Users of some early home computers called these codes pokes, named after the command used to input them. Nowadays, cheating like this is considered “hacking” because the user must use external software or hardware to change values in the game memory.
Cheat codes are, by definition, considered cheating and most serious players only use them for experimentation, if at all. Sometimes, though, using cheat codes is necessary, particularly in the case of bugs: If a serious game-stopping bug is encountered, a cheat code may be able to bypass it without the need to start the whole game over again from the beginning.
The game Micro Machines for the NES had a bug where the game would freeze if the player reversed over the start/finish line at the start of the race. This was due to a single zero being a one in the code. Discovered after thousands of games were made, Codemasters, rather than throw the cartridges away, which would have been very costly, used technology from their Game Genie cheat cartridge to rewrite the code in every game.
Often cheats spell a word, possibly comical or relating to the cheat (for example, “Start”, “Left”, “A”, “B” would spell “Slab”).
The Xbox 360 is a video game console produced by Microsoft, developed in cooperation with IBM, ATI, and SiS. Its Xbox Live service allows players to compete online and download arcade games and content such as game demos, trailers, TV shows, music videos, or rented movies. The Xbox 360 is the successor to the Xbox, and competes with Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii as part of the seventh generation of gaming systems.
The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. It is the first console to provide a near-simultaneous launch across the three major regions, and to provide wireless controller support at launch. The console sold out completely at release (with the exception of Japan) and, as of June 30, 2007, shipped 11.6 million units worldwide.[1] It is available in three versions as listed below.
The Xbox is a sixth generation video game console produced by Microsoft Corporation. It was Microsoft’s first foray into the gaming console market, and competed directly with Sony’s PlayStation 2, and the Nintendo GameCube. It was first released on November 15, 2001 in North America; February 22, 2002 in Japan; and on March 14, 2002 in Europe. The Australian launch came on April 26th of the same year. It is the predecessor to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console. The Xbox was Microsoft’s first product that ventured into the console arena, after having collaborated with Sega in porting Windows CE to the Dreamcast console. Notable launch titles for the console included Halo: Combat Evolved, Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding, Dead or Alive 3, Project Gotham Racing, and Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee.
The Xbox 360 launched with a number of games. The console’s best-selling game for 2005, Call of Duty 2, sold over a million copies.[56] Only five other games sold this amount in the console’s first year in the market: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter,[57]The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion,[58]Dead or Alive 4,[59]Saints Row[60] and Gears of War.[61] As of October 4, 2007, Halo 3 is the Xbox 360’s best-selling game with as much as 5.2 million copies sold.[2] First-party developer Rare had two games at launch: Perfect Dark Zero, which was Rare’s first major commercial success after their acquisition by Microsoft; and was believed by some[weasel words] to be the console’s flagship launch title; and Kameo: Elements of Power. Only six games were initially offered in Japan, and eagerly anticipated titles like Dead or Alive 4 and Enchanted Arms were not released until several weeks after launch. Games more suitable to the region are planned or have since been released, such as Chromehounds, Ninety-Nine Nights, and Phantasy Star Universe. Microsoft-backed Mistwalker has since released Blue Dragon in the region, and currently has two other Japanese-style games in development, Lost Odyssey and Cry On. On October 19, 2006, over 10,000 pre-orders of a limited-edition Blue Dragon bundle sold out in Japan on the first day. The pack, priced at JP¥29,800 includes the Xbox 360 core system with a copy of Blue Dragon, along with a table calendar, Blue Dragon faceplate, and five miniature character figures. At the Lepzig game convention in 2007, Microsoft revealed details of PGR4, Rock Band, Tom Clancy’s EndWar, Dark Sector, FIFA 08, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare and Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground.
E3 2006 was the first large-scale show after the console’s launch and the first trailer for Halo 3, the sequel to the original Xbox’s best selling game, was shown there. Fable 2, a sequel to the Xbox’s best-selling RPG, was also shown, along with Alan Wake, Mass Effect and Too Human. Bill Gates spoke of plans to integrate several Microsoft services into one entity with Live Anywhere. This service will allow multiplayer games and communication possible between Xbox 360 and the Windows Vista operating system for the PC. Shadowrun was the first game announced to be compatible with Live Anywhere. Several games originally released on PC have also been released on the Xbox 360, such as F.E.A.R. and Quake 4. Grand Theft Auto IV was shown and will be the first title in the series to be released for the Xbox 360 the same day as its PlayStation 3 counterpart. At X06, Microsoft announced new titles, along with information on future releases. Splinter Cell: Conviction, set to release after Splinter Cell: Double Agent, was announced to be exclusive to the Xbox 360, as were BioShock and Banjo-Kazooie 3. At the event, Halo Wars was also announced, along with an untitled Halo project. Microsoft published sequels to some of its more successful franchises on the original Xbox, such as Forza Motorsport 2, Project Gotham Racing 3 & 4, and Fuzion Frenzy 2. In addition to sequels, they have published original games based on new IPs such as Viva Piñata and Gears of War.

The PlayStation 3(プレイステーション3Pureisutēshon Surī?, trademarked PLAYSTATION®3,[4] commonly abbreviated PS3) is the third home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment and the successor to the PlayStation 2 as part of the PlayStation series. The PlayStation 3 competes with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. In sales and market share, it is currently in third place.[5] The system was first released on November 11, 2006, in Japan and on November 17, 2006 in the United States. Its primary storage media is the Blu-ray Disc, though it also supports DVDs, CDs, and with some models SACDs.[6][7] It can output high-definition video for both video games and movies in up to 1080p resolution.
It was initially available in two configurations, the 20 GB Basic model and the 60 GB Premium model. However, the 20 GB model was discontinued in North America on April 11, 2007, due to an alleged lack of consumer demand, although many internet analysts theorized the real reason for the deletion of the unit was lower profit margins on the 20 GB unit, as the difference in cost in the parts used for the 20 GB unit and the 60 GB was less than US$30.[8] While it is still available in Japan, it was not released at all in PAL territories.[9] On May 21, 2007, Sony announced that it would be releasing the PS3 in South Korea in only one configuration, featuring an 80 GB hard drive. It is speculated that the larger-capacity hard drive may be to accommodate video on demand applications planned in the region.[10] On July 9, 2007, the 80 GB model was released in North America.[11]
The PlayStation 3 launched in North America on November 17, 2006 with a total of twelve titles, while another three were released before the end of the year.[76] After five days of sales it was confirmed that Insomniac’s first person shooter Resistance: Fall of Man was the top-selling game, and was heavily praised by numerous video game websites, including GameSpot and IGN, both of whom awarded it with their PlayStation 3 Game of the Year award for 2006.[77][78] Some titles missed the launch window and were delayed until 2007, such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, F.E.A.R. and Sonic the Hedgehog. During the Japanese launch, Ridge Racer 7 was the top-selling launch title, while Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire also fared well in sales; both of which were offerings from Namco Bandai. The PlayStation 3 launched in Europe with twenty-four titles, including some that were not offered in the North American and Japanese launched, such as Formula One Championship Edition, MotorStorm and Virtua Fighter 5. Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm have been the most successful titles so far; each has sold over one million copies worldwide.[79]
At E³ 2007, Sony were able to show off a number of their upcoming video games for the PlayStation 3, including Heavenly Sword, Lair and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, all of which are set for release in 2007. They also showed off a number of titles set for a 2008 release; most notably Killzone 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2004 first person shooter. LittleBigPlanet was also demonstrated during the event and subsequently won the award for ‘Most Original’ game of the show.[80] A completely new title called Infamous was also presented to the media, expanding on the ever-growing sandbox genre. Several PlayStation Network titles were also on display, including SOCOM: Confrontation and Warhawk, both of which will be released as downloads via the PlayStation Store as well as on Blu-ray Disc.[81][82] It was also revealed that the first-person shooter Unreal Tournament 3 will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3 in 2007,[83] adding to the selection of exclusive titles available for the holiday season. Perhaps the biggest announcement, however, was that the highly-anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will be exclusive the PlayStation 3, amid rumors that the game would appear on other platforms. Two other important exclusive titles to be released by Square Enix for the PlayStation 3, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a dual installment in the Fabula Nova Crystallis compliation, were shown at TGS 2007 in order to appease the Japanese market,[84][85] as well as other exclusive titles such as Star Ocean 4, White Knight Story and Yakuza
